The NWS in sterling Virginia has issued a winter storm warning for a mixture of freezing rain and sleet, which is in effect from 6 am Tuesday to 9 am est wednesday. The winter weather advisory is no longer in effect.
High pressure centered over Pennsylvania will be tracking across new jersey on Tuesday. At the same time low pressure will be moving northeast from the Tennessee valley. This low will draw moisture into the mid atlantic. With subfreezing air in place at the surface, wintry precipitation in the form of sleet and freezing rain is expected Tuesday into Wednesday morning.
By the time the storm exits the region late Wednesday around one quarter inch of ice is possible in the warning area.
A winter storm warning means significant amounts of ice are expected or occurring. This will make travel very hazardous or impossible.
